EXSC 210 Sport and Exercise Psychology

This course will provide the student with the opportunity to study human behavior in sport and exercise settings. It is designed to provide the student with information about research in the field of sport psychology as well as practical knowledge to become a more effective fitness instructor, athlete, athletic administrator, physical educator, personal trainer, or coach. It will examine theories of individual personality and explore the social phenomenon associated with sport participation.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Define and describe sport psychology and explain roles of sport psychologists.
  2. 2. Examine psychological factors that influence an individual’s involvement and performance in sport and exercise activities.
  3. 3. Explain how group/team variables impact individual and group performance and strategies for improving group performance.
  4. 4. Develop a psychological skill training program to improve the performance of an athlete, including identifying areas of difficulty and recommending psychological skills that appropriately address the area of difficulty.
  5. 5. Explain why individuals choose to avoid sport and exercise activities and recommend strategies for increasing participation.
  6. 6. Identify special problems that may be encountered in sports and exercise activities, including injuries, aggress, eating disorders, substance abuse, and overtraining.
