GEOG 101 Introduction to World Geography

This course will focus on the effects of spatial relationships on the earth's human population. We will study the location of people, relative to each other. The student will examine the physical environment and how it influences spatial decision-making processes. We will analyze the geo-economic relationships which influence the earth's settlement patterns. The student will develop an understanding of the increasingly interdependent and interconnected world in which we live, and the relationship between the actions of the individual and the impact which these actions have on other places in the world.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Apply specific geographic terminology, methodology, and definitions.
  2. 2. Develop an understanding of the relationships between human activities and the physical environment.
  3. 3. Analyze how local and global climate change affects populations and their social and environmental worldviews.
  4. 4. Analyze globalization with respect to economics, politics, the environment, and/or global cultures and populations.
  5. 5. Identify energy sources that are alternatives to petroleum, and describe their advantages and disadvantages.
  6. 6. Analyze the impact and effects of globalization to the physical environment and the ethical debates surrounding this impact.
