NURS 134 Family Centered Nursing I

This course introduces the student to contemporary perspectives on the health care of women and the childbearing family. Students will develop competencies required to administer safe, technical nursing care to patients with both common and complex health care needs. Utilizing the curriculum framework, the student will examine patient responses to stress and will select nursing actions to meet patient needs.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Utilize knowledge of anatomy, physiology and psychosocial adaptation in the application of nursing
    care to families experiencing pregnancy, childbirth and parenting a newborn.
  2. 2. Collaborate with the health care team, patient and significant support persons to promote wellness and
    disease prevention when caring for patients during the reproductive years, pregnancy, childbirth and
    parenting a newborn.
  3. 3. Participate in activities that promote individual growth in the practice of family-centered nursing.
  4. 4. Describe a holistic approach to the provision of nursing care to patients experiencing pregnancy,
    childbirth and parenting a newborn.
  5. 5. Demonstrate caring, integrity, safe practice and accountability in practicing the art and science of
    nursing as it is applied to family-centered nursing.
  6. 6. Utilize critical thinking in the application of the nursing process as it is applied to women and new
    families.
  7. 7. Deliver care to families in an effective and efficient manner, maintaining legal and ethical standards.
  8. 8. Interpret the impact of pregnancy, childbirth and parenting a newborn on members of a multicultural
    society.
