EDUC 297 Field Experience: Introduction To Special Education

This is a field-based course that provides the opportunity to explore the theories learned regarding the various types of exceptional children. Students will analyze the various exceptionalities in the assigned classroom and the influence of these on learning.

Prerequisite

This course is only available to students who have successfully completed the equivalent of Introduction to Special Education at another higher education institution but who have not completed 15 hours of field experience as part of that course (EDUC 200). Additionally, permission of the Director of Teacher Education is required in order to enroll in this course

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the sequence and components of the IEP Team process, including the development of the IEP based on student strengths and needs and data-based decision making, the options for service delivery, and related services.
  2. Identify characteristics of and terminology associated with students with different educational disabilities and how these characteristics impact the learning process.
  3. Understand and identify the impact of language, culture, attitudes, life cycle, and family background on the learning of students with disabilities.
  4. Identify instructional strategies, techniques, assessments, accommodations, and modifications to the general education curriculum which meet the needs of students with disabilities in general education settings.
