AVMP 120 Concept and Story Development

Previously TVRD 125. This course is an introduction to concept development and storytelling methods through a series of short writing assignments of various forms. Students will generate ideas and stories for creative projects in print and electronic media such as television, radio, and film. This course is writing intensive.

Course Objectives

  1. Understand the foundation of story development, which is the genesis for all forms of media and for all genres within that media.
  2. Recognize and apply the fundamentals of storytelling and conceptual development, in part by reading a variety of literature forms.
  3. Cultivate one's own individual voice as a storyteller.
  4. Write a variety of assignments and develop story ideas for creative projects in print and electronic media such as television, radio, and film.
  5. Engage in various methods and forms of personal storytelling.
  6. Recognize that all people are individuals who have their own personal experience from which to draw.
  7. Demonstrate consideration for the work of one's peers, and provide constructive feedback on the ideas and writings of other students.
  8. Revise one’s own writing as part of the writing process, and respond to feedback from the instructor to improve one’s writing.
  9. Develop critical and analytical skills in order to engage with others in intellectual, analytical, and aesthetic discourse about one's own work, as well as the work of others.
  10. Increase creativity and risk-taking in one's writing.
