EDUC 110 Introduction to Education
Students will examine the basic principles and philosophical traditions of Western and American Education. Students will also evaluate the trends, issues, and career opportunities and options in contemporary education. A 15-hour Field Experience outside of class time is required. Students are placed in a Howard County Public School or may use a K-12 school where they are employed.

Course Objectives
- 1. Explain the varied aspects of teaching, including the knowledge and skill characteristics of effective teachers, to become aware of the current realities in today’s classrooms.
- Relate significant social, cultural, historical, financial, and philosophical developments in American education to contemporary issues and the development and change of curriculum and educational practices.
- Describe how exceptionalities, individual differences, culture and diversity, and experiences affect equity, teaching, and schools including the impact on growth and development, schooling, student performance, and success.
- Explain how the characteristics of schools and the curriculum are a reflection of societal and cultural values and principles.
- Apply fundamental/basic rudiments of school law, articulating those laws that have shaped basic educational policy.
- Discuss ethical standards of the teaching profession by identifying ethical and unethical teacher behaviors and explaining the consequences of unethical behavior.
- Analyze and interpret various kinds of student data, examining the role that standards and assessment of student learning have in today's classroom.
- Identify major events and figures in the history of education.
- Select appropriate technologies to design and/or deliver instruction, to increase student engagement, and to best support the learning needs of a diverse student population.

- Use selected technology tools to facilitate effective communication and collaboration with colleagues, school administrators, parents, and with and between students.
