FILM 221 European Film

This course is an interdisciplinary study of contemporary European society and culture through the medium of film. The course will, on a rotating basis, focus on a specific European country or region, and its contributions to world cinema. Students will explore connections between artistic expression and the historical and cultural realities of that country or region from the dawn of cinema in the early 1900s to the present.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and organize information and ideas related to enduring and contemporary issues in European films.
  2. Generate, explore, and consider a wide range and number of ideas, possibilities, and alternatives of various aspects of European film.
  3. Examine ideas or outcomes in depth and make judgments of social and cultural contexts in thematic and technical concerns of European film.
  4. Analyze and connect disparate ideas within and across cultures, especially as related to European film.
