PUBH 101 Introduction to Public Health

Introduction to Public Health is a survey course designed to introduce students to public health topics such as biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental and occupational health, behavioral health, health policy and administration, and ethics. The course provides methodology for understanding health and health policy matters at a population level and exposes students to various occupations in the field of public health.

Course Objectives

  1. Define public health and its significance in society.
  2. Identify significant public health achievements and their effect on population health.
  3. Identify and understand the components of the core functions and disciplines of public health and their role in population health.
  4. Understand the important concepts related to program planning including addressing health disparities and vulnerable populations, needs assessments, and the importance of evidence-based approaches.
  5. Compare and contrast social and behavioral public health interventions vs. regulatory public health interventions.
  6. Explain the burden of infectious and chronic diseases on morbidity and mortality and approaches to early detection and prevention.
  7. Describe the basic organization of healthcare and public health systems and the contributions of health professionals.
  8. Identify the role of public health in natural or terrorism-related disaster prevention and management.
