Health Professions Education Certificate Options

There are two non-degree certificate options available:

Current Curriculum Plan - Certificate of Completion: 9 credits

This three-course sequence addresses basic concepts of teaching and learning, course design, student assessment, and teaching practicum. No application form is needed and there is no formal matriculation. Contact the Director of the Health Professions Education Program for questions, and to register. Courses are to be taken in sequence.

Learners will receive a Certificate of Completion at the successful completion of these courses. Participants interested in continuing for the Certificate of Advanced Studies may apply for non-degree admission (see below).

Both concentrations, Academic and Health Professions Simulation, are offered for the Certificate of Completion.

This option satisfies the National League for Nurses' three-course eligibility requirement to sit for the Certified Nurse Educator Examination.

Health Professions Education Concentrations

Concentrations are six credits of study completed  as part of the planned program of study, and take the place of the elective requirement.

Concentration in Simulation-based Learning:

The MGH Institute was one of the first three master's programs in the US to offer a formal concentration in the use of simulation as an educational tool.  We are pleased to collaborate with the Center for Medical Simulation where students will complete both the Comprehensive Instructor Workshop and the Advanced instructor course.  Through these learning experiences, students will gain competencies in the general use of the technology, course integration, and debriefing as a teaching tool.

Concentration in Research Methods in Education:

For those focusing on the research aspects of teaching and learning, a suite of advanced methods courses will be available.  Required courses are Advanced Quantitative Methods and Psychometrics course and Advanced Qualitative Methods course.  Please work directly with your academic adviser to plan for the completion of these courses as early as possible following the HE744 Research Methods in Education course.

Traditional Academic Track

This sequence provides the essentials of developing a complete learning project and culminates in either the teaching practicum for the Certificate of Completion or the synthesis project for the CAS.

This option is ideal for health professionals such as preceptors, clinical supervisors, and faculty who wish to expand their general teaching skills and education-related competencies in the classroom, online, or in the clinical setting.

Health Professions Simulation Track

Recognizing that simulation represents a paradigm shift in health professions education, this innovative concentration addresses the increasing needs of faculty and clinical instructors to:

  • Develop competencies in simulation as an instructional tool in health professions education, training, and research
  • Improve simulation technology, educational methods, and practitioner assessment

* Graduates of the Harvard Macy Institute Program for Educators in Health Professions and the Institute for Medical Simulation have streamlined access to either the Certificate of Completion or the Certificate of Advanced Studies in this concentration. Please contact the Health Professions Education Program for further information.

As of September 2012, the Institute also offers a Master of Science in Health Professions Education.
