1.2.1 Purpose of the Clinical-Academic Review and Support Team
The purpose of the Clinical/Academic Review and Support Team (CARST) meeting is to provide a forum for discussion of faculty concerns regarding academic and/or clinical performance as well as non-academic issues that are relevant to the student’s progress in the Program and to refer students to resources and create systems of support.
Students who fall below a grade point average of 3.0 or who receive non-passing or passing with concerns grades in clinic will automatically be scheduled for a CARST meeting. Any faculty member may request a CARST meeting. If it is determined that a CARST meeting is warranted, then the student will be notified by e-mail of the need to attend the CARST meeting. Student attendance at the CARST meeting is mandatory.
Students are encouraged to actively participate in the CARST meetings. After a brief summary of faculty concerns, they are given an opportunity to provide their perspective on the issues being addressed. Following a period of open discussion, the Academic Advisor (or designated faculty member) summarizes the issues presented, including relevant information provided by the student. A written summary of the recommendations, action plan, and appropriate follow-up to the meeting will be provided to the student within one week, with a copy placed in the student’s electronic file in the department. The student’s Academic Advisor is responsible for monitoring compliance with the CARST meeting recommendations
