9.2.1 Use of Artificial Intelligence

Individual and team assignments must adhere to the IHP’s academic integrity policy. Students are expected to compose, summarize, compare, and synthesize without the use of unauthorized aids including artificial intelligence (AI) tools or AI language models, unless said tools are explicitly permitted by the instructor and disclosed by the studentReference managers (eg. Mendeley, Zotero) and spelling / grammar checkers are the exception and can be used to improve the readability and language of student writingStudents suspected of inappropriately using unauthorized aids such as AI language models / content creators will be referred to OT Department’s Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures (CAPP).

Students are also advised to adhere to the "MGH IHP Generative Guidelines for Students", some of which is highlighted below:

Generative Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are pervasive in academia and the healthcare industry. These tools, such as ChatGPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer), are designed to generate responses to user prompts and questions. They can be powerful tools to assist people in analyzing data, and their presence in our personal and professional lives will undoubtedly continue to grow. Therefore, it is essential that the entire IHP community become familiar with their applications and appropriate and ethical use of them.  We encourage all students to explore the different AI tools at their disposal while simultaneously being aware of specific course and department policies they may encounter. The following guidelines provide information to students regarding how the MGH Institute of Health Professions approaches AI literacy as a component of learning.

Students are encouraged to:

  • Be mindful of course expectations and policies towards AI in all assignments and course requirements.

  • Communicate with course faculty to clarify expectations.

  • Acknowledge and adhere to course, program, and IHP expectations regarding use of AI.

  • Take full responsibility for any work submitted that is generated by AI, this included checking for accuracy and proper use of citations.

  • Be mindful of the need to safeguard confidentiality of patients, students, staff, and faculty when interfacing with AI technologies. Confidential data,

  • including but not limited to health protected information from patients and clients, should not be entered into publicly available AI tools.

  • Be mindful of and adhere to policies and expectations of clinical partners during clinical internships.

Students are encouraged to follow the evolving use of AI in education and clinical practice, attend closely to faculty expectations, and program requirements.
