GI-9. Awards and Fellowships

Students engaged in their last year of study in the DPT program are eligible to be nominated for the following awards and fellowships:

MGH IHP Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy Awards


Adams Fellow Award

The Adams Fund, created by former IHP adjunct faculty member, Barbara Adams, has been established to offer financial support for graduate education for physical therapists at the Institute.  The "Adams Fellow(s)" is given to students in the Graduate Programs in Physical Therapy who show evidence of leadership abilities, service to the profession, and the potential to make a significant contribution as a clinical scholar. This is a $2000.00 award. Students may self-nominate or be nominated by peers or faculty for this award.



Marjorie K. Ionta Award for Clinical Excellence

The Ionta Award is named in honor of Professor Emerita Marjorie K. Ionta who was Chief Physical Therapist in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1958 to 1981. The award is presented to individuals in the DPT Program who have demonstrated growth and a consistent, excellent performance coupled with outstanding humanistic qualities. This is a $500.00 award. Nominations for this award must come from faculty.


Mary Mankin Endowment Fund

The Mary Mankin Endowment Fund was established in 1992 in memory of Mary Mankin, mother of Henry J. Mankin, MD, former Trustee of the MGH Institute of Health Professions and Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. The award is presented to a student in the DPT Program who demonstrates significant potential as a clinical scholar and the ability to make a contribution to the physical therapy evidence that supports optimal patient care. This is a $1000.00 award. Nominations for this award must come from faculty.

 

American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT)

 

ACAPT National Student Honor Society

The National Physical Therapy Student Honor Society is an organization established by the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy (ACAPT) to recognize current DPT students who demonstrate excellence, integrity, and professionalism in areas of academic achievement, leadership, and service or research. Year 3 DPT students are invited to apply to become a member of the ACAPT National Honor Society if they are in the top 25% of the DPT class and are APTA members. Students will be inducted into the Society who demonstrate excellence in all membership criteria, and who were individually selected by representatives from their respective ACAPT member institution. Letters of recommendations can come from faculty, licensed PTs, Clinical Instructors, and current or former DPT students.

 

American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) of MA

Ruth P. Hall Clinical Fellowship Award
Ruth P. Hall had dedicated her career to the profession of Physical Therapy. Ms. Hall's educational concerns, devotion to quality patient care, high standards of ethical practice and her genuine love of humanity, has benefited generations of physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students throughout the years. The award is designed to recognize a physical therapy and physical therapist assistant student who demonstrate the professional qualities of dedication and caring which exemplified the physical therapy career of Ruth Hall. Students must be nominated for this award by an APTA of MA member in good standing, serving in the capacity of Clinical Instructor (CI), Center Coordinator of Clinical Education (CCCE), Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education (ACCE), or Academic faculty.

 

Award recipients are honored during graduation ceremonies. Award criteria will be distributed to all students.
