PAC 102A Basic Employment

Basic Employment introduces students to the concepts of professional life skills, professional social skills and professional work skills as well as business communication and time managements.  Students are supported to apply these skills through 12 hours per week of on-campus internships in NLU departments that match their skills and interests.  Students also begin to develop the skills to self-advocate and recognize and request the reasonable accommodations they need to be successful in on-campus internships.

Basic Life Skills and Learning teaches students to manage their physical environment, prepare balanced meals, inventory and shop for groceries and household items, plan social activities and navigate public transportation with support from Independent Living Skills (ILS) coaches, and resident life assistants (RLAs).

Basic Life Skills and Learning teaches students to manage their physical environment of bedroom and bathroom, prepare simple breakfasts and packed lunches, inventory and shop for groceries and household items, plan social activities and navigate public transportation with significant support from Independent Living Skills (ILS) coaches and resident life assistants (RLAs).

This course is designed to introduce the P.R.O.B.L.E.M. solving method of conflict resolution and the first few components of S.M.A.R.T. goals as well as basic money concepts including the use of checking accounts, savings accounts and online banking as well as the use of various payment methods, including cash, checks, debit cards, credit cards, prepaid cards and person-to-person payments.

Basic Health and Wellness introduces students to the concept of Emotional First Aids and supports them to physical and emotional health.  Students learn the basics of planning simple, healthy breakfasts and lunches, the initial steps to contacting their health care providers and setting up appointments, how to access the NLU Counseling and Wellness Center and how to create a simple fitness routine.
