Credit Hour Assignment

Credit Hour Definition

All credit‐bearing degree and certificate programs at Fredonia are approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and The State University of New York (SUNY). Calculation of credits hours for these programs follow the NYSED and SUNY guidelines, which are consistent with the U.S. Department of education’s definition of a credit hour.

Credit Hour Assignment

All semester/credit hours awarded by Fredonia will conform with NYSED and SUNY guidelines. These guidelines are also in compliance with the policies of the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.

Upon review and approval at the program level, new courses are reviewed by the Academic Affairs Committee. The Academic Affairs Committee is charged with following the policy on credit hours in their review and approval of all courses and for certifying that the expected student learning for the course meets the credit hour standard. Existing courses will be evaluated regularly in the department’s program assessment.

To ensure regular and consistent review of adherence to the credit hour guidelines in the course schedule and catalog, courses will be reviewed each semester during the course scheduling process. Approved courses are sent to the Registrar’s Office during the course scheduling building process. Department Chairs and Deans review and approve the course schedule prior to submission to the Registrar. The Registrar’s Office also reviews the class schedules to ensure that all classes are scheduled for the minimum number of minutes corresponding to the credits assigned. Discrepancies are handled with the appropriate department and Dean for correction and confirmation.
