FRN 181 Maximizing Study Abroad

Maximizing Study Abroad helps students approach and enrich the study and/or sojourning abroad experience from the perspectives of intercultural communication, cultural adjustment, and practical language learning strategies prior to departing for their target cultures. Participants are applicants to UP Study Abroad programs and UP students sojourning abroad. This course counts toward meeting requirements of the Sojourner Scholars Program.

Intensive review and further development of oral and written proficiency skills. Short oral presentations on cultural topics.

Intensive review and further development of oral and written proficiency skills. Short oral presentations on cultural topics.

FRN 205 Accelerated Intermediate French

This intensive course, which substitutes for FRN 201 and FRN 202, offers the students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the French language and strengthen their linguistic skills. FRN 205 follows FRN 102 and prepares students for FRN 301. It also allows to complete the language requirement in the BA core curriculum. Review of grammar, conversation and introduction to French literature.

FRN 301 Advanced French Conversation

Advanced review and expansion of grammar and idiomatic expressions to prepare students for the 400-level courses. A broad variety of activities and reading materials are used to develop conversational proficiency and improve accuracy in oral and written expression. Conducted in French.

FRN 302 Advanced French Conversation and Composition

Continued review and expansion of grammar, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions. A broad variety of activities and reading materials are used to develop conversational proficiency and improve accuracy in oral and written expression. Weekly compositions on a variety of topics. Conducted in French.

FRN 381 Language Learner Strategies for the Classroom and Beyond

Participants will become familiar with how experts in the field consider the language learning process and how theories of second language acquisition connect to their own efforts to learn a foreign language. More importantly, participants will reframe how they go about learning a foreign language, try new strategies, and document what they have done through a diary research project.

Through the exploration of French movies, this course analyzes the evolution of the French cinema and its culture since its birth in the late nineteenth century till today. It also examines the cinematic language and techniques used in the films.

FRN 411 French Phonetics

Systematic study of the pronunciation, articulation, and intonation of modern French. Exercises in phonetic transcription. French songs, radio broadcasts, and TV news on the internet. Taught in French.

FRN 417 Advanced French Grammar and Conversation I

Thorough review and refinement of the essentials of French grammar in order to enhance writing, reading, and speaking skills. Conducted in French.

FRN 418 Advanced French Vocabulary and Conversation Workshop

Extensive practice in speaking the language with emphasis on the acquisition and use of new vocabulary and more complex idiomatic phrases.

Continued in-depth study of advanced French grammar. Application of the new, more complex structures in conversation. Conducted in French.

FRN 420 Francophone Literatures and Cultures

This course introduces the French-speaking countries’ cultures and literatures. Through text analysis and discussions, it addresses issues related to the relationship between the French language and the identities.

FRN 421 Advanced French Culture and Civilization

Study of the social, artistic, philosophical, and political currents of France and other French-speaking countries. Taught in French.

Study of the phonology, syntax, and lexicon of colloquial French in order to improve comprehension. Taught in French.

FRN 423 Contemporary France

Study and discussion of the main social and cultural issues in France from the 1960s to the present. Exploration and evaluation of current events covered in the French media. The material used will come from French cultural texts, newspapers, radio and television, as well as movies, advertising, and songs. Taught in French.

Academic internships are available for qualified students (3.0 GPA; 3.25 GPA in French). Internships provide students with job experience pertinent to the study of French. The internship may be taken for one to three credit hours. Students may receive an IP (In Progress) grade until the completion of their internship.
