Civic Engagement
Western Piedmont Community College is committed to civic engagement and believes this service is an integral component of meeting the College's mission to improve lives and promote growth in the community.
Civic Engagement is defined as "individual and collective actions designed to identify and address issues of public concern. Civic engagement can take many forms, from individual voluntarism to organizational involvement to electoral participation. It can include efforts to directly address an issue, work with others in a community to solve a problem or interact with the institutions of representative democracy" (American Psychological Association). Civic Engagement at Western Piedmont Community College takes place in a variety of ways. Faculty, staff and students provide hundreds of hours of service to the community through the college's campus-wide volunteer opportunities. These include the Days of Service, Burke Reads, the Get Unplugged! Get Outdoors! Day, and the college Habitat for Humanity team. Student clubs and organizations provide service in activities ranging from voter registration drives to volunteering in local schools.
Students may also participate in civic engagement through Service Learning classes.
