Social and Human Services

(Formerly Human Services Technology)

The Social and Human Services curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies which provide social, community, and behavioral health services. Along with core courses, students take courses which prepare them for specialization in specific human service areas.

Coursework includes development of professional knowledge, skills, and values in human services. Opportunities for experiential learning allow students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Graduates should qualify for positions in government, private, and non-profit social and human services agencies. Graduates may choose to transfer and continue their education at a variety of colleges and universities.

Upon successful completion of this program, the student should be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of legal and ethical issues in the human services field
  • Apply skills and knowledge to the principles of group dynamics
  • Perform a formal intake interview
  • Practice crisis management skills in a variety of settings
  • Identify behavioral and substance addictions and associated standard treatment modalities

Work-based Learning

WBL course internship sites must be arranged by the student and preapproved by the program coordinator. Internship sites reserve the right to refuse students, release students, require drug screens, require background checks, require immunizations and/or require health screens. Any student dismissed from internship will receive an automatic F for both the WBL supervision and practical courses.
