Inspection, Search and Seizure
National Louis University reserves the right to routinely inspect student property on campus or in residence hall facilities for the purpose of maintaining compliance with regulations and safety standards described in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog and the Student Guidebook.
In general, personal property while it is on campus, in student rooms, in locked drawers and in lockers, is considered the student’s private domain; however, when there is reasonable cause to believe that the student is violating University policy, local, state or federal regulations or laws, these areas may also be subject to inspection.
Procedure
When there is reasonable cause to believe that the student is violating University policy, local, state or federal regulations or laws, University staff members may inspect student property to terminate the violation or render the situation harmless. Whenever possible, the University staff members shall request assistance of one or more additional staff. The University staff members will request entrance or access to the property. The staff members will attempt to persuade the student to surrender whatever evidence pertains to the violation. Upon refusal by the student to cooperate with the inspection, the room, locker or other property will be locked or otherwise secured until such time as two or more members of University authorized staff can assist. All materials that violate University policies, local, state or federal laws will be seized and, at the discretion of the Assistant Dean of Students, the proper authorities will be notified.
