ENGL 213 Latin American Literature
Students will study Latin American Literature, in English translation, from the pre-Colonial era to the present. Students are introduced to major literary topics and themes within a variety of Latin American nations and cultures, including indigenous and Afro-Latin voices. Students will read from several genres, including the novel, the short story, poetry, the testimonial narrative, and historical nonfiction. In addition, students will explore readings, films, and discussions to learn the social and historical context necessary for understanding and appreciating Latin American literature from Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. This course is writing intensive.

Course Objectives
- Identify and apply relevant literary terms, concepts, devices, and characteristics of Latin American literature.
- Apply appropriate literary criticism (perspectives) for effective literary analysis.
- Use evidence from literary texts and secondary texts to compose original and insightful literary analysis.
- Pose questions and analyze how the select literature reflects intellectual, social, historical, and aesthetic perspectives of Latin America.
- Analyze how the select Latin American literature reflects human values and thus has relevance to today's world.
- Explore multiple perspectives and subjects in Latin American cultures as they are represented in the literature.
- Identify and explain the significance of the different periods in Latin American literature, from pre-Colonial times to the present.
- Communicate effectively an understanding of the literature and exchange ideas with others.
- Write analytically about Latin American literature using appropriate research and documentation.
