BMET 212 Biomedical Instrumentation II

In this theoretical-practical course, students will utilize electronic and mechanical principles for maintenance and repair of biomedical equipment (electro-mechanical, clinical lab, ultrasonics, patient monitoring, x-ray, and radiation). Students will be in a simulated clinical setting where they will perform on-site repairs and preventative maintenance.

Objectives

  1. Classify various medical equipment according to the role of each in the patient care system in the hospital environment.
  2. Use correct terminology and demonstrate conceptual understanding when describing physiological or equipment functions.
  3. Apply manufacturer’s service literature, schematics, and operator’s manuals to properly calibrate, maintain, and operate equipment.
  4. Describe various regulatory agencies, the role they perform, and mandatory reporting pertaining to safe environmental and equipment operation.
  5. Analyze circuitry in terms of stability, frequency response, noise, etc.
  6. Plan an organized troubleshooting technique using schematics, block diagrams, and circuit descriptions.
  7. Identify the hazards and related safety procedures and test equipment when operating various biomedical instrumentation.
  8. Measure and interpret various signals using biomedical transducers.
  9. Identify, personalize, and analyze interpersonal and ethical issues encountered by a technician working in the medical profession.
