MACH 110 Machine Shop Fundamentals I
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of machining. Using both manual and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) equipment such as lathes, mills, saws, and grinders, students will learn to produce parts directly from blueprints. The course will also emphasize machine operational terminology and theory, and the safety work practices required in modern manufacturing environments.
Hours Weekly
2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab
Course Objectives
- Identify major machine tools, their components, and their fundamental capabilities within a modern machine shop environment.
- Apply proper shop safety practices and the correct selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during all machining activities.
- Interpret engineering drawings by recognizing dimensions, tolerances, and measurement requirements needed to produce parts to specification.
- Select appropriate cutting tools, work holding devices, and machining parameters, to include basic feeds and speeds, for turning and milling operations.
- Operate manual and/or CNC lathes and milling machines to perform basic machining processes while applying proper tool care, setup procedures, and machine adjustments.
- Measure and evaluate machined features using precision measuring tools to verify part accuracy, ensuring the part meets specifications.
- Produce a machined part that meets specifications called for on a machine print by applying the safety practices, measurement skills, tooling knowledge, and proper machine operation introduced in the course.
