a. Purpose and Guiding Principles
The MGB University of Health Professions is committed to addressing faculty concerns in a manner that is just, timely, and consistent with the values of an academic community. In most instances, concerns are appropriately resolved through direct communication, supervisory engagement, and academic leadership within departments or schools. These approaches reflect the University’s commitment to collegiality, professional accountability, and continuous improvement.
This policy establishes a limited and structured process for the review of a narrow category of concerns involving significant adverse actions and alleged violations of written University policy, including, but not limited to University policies and standards governing academic freedom, which are defined, interpreted, and applied by the University.
This policy is not intended to serve as a general forum for workplace concerns or disagreements with supervisory decisions, nor is it designed to replace other institutional or Mass General Brigham (MGB) processes.
The University retains authority over academic, operational, and personnel decisions. This policy provides a structured process to review whether those decisions were consistent with written University policy, including University policies related to academic freedom. While this policy incorporates faculty participation through a review panel where appropriate, it does so within a framework that preserves institutional responsibility for final decision-making.
This policy is complimented by the Problem Resolution Standard Operating Procedures.
