Opportunities for special studies in chemistry utilizing the chemical literature and/or laboratory techniques. Topics include but are not limited to: advanced analytical chemistry, advanced inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry seminar, environmental chemistry, environmental issues, handling hazardous materials, "hands-on" science for elementary and middle school teachers, organic synthesis, physical chemistry, practicum in clinical chemistry, and safty in the academic laboratory. Prerequisite: approval of department chairperson. Laboratory fee when applicable. Offered when needed.

This study will include an introduction to th e legal aspects of academic laboratory safety , the basic concepts of a laboratory safety p rogram, Material Safety Data Sheets, and wast e disposal for academic science laboratories K-12. Prerequisite: Approval of the departmen t chairperson.

Study of the principles and methods of handli ng hazardous materials in the workplace. Cove rage includes nature and scope of hazards in the workplace, overview of regulations of haz ardous materials and worker safety, occupatio nal diseases, fundamentals of industrial hygi ene, basic concepts of toxicology, and introd uction to risk assessment. Prerequisite: Appr oval of the department chairperson.

Concepts of environmental science will be int roduced. Study will focus on the major enviro nmental issues of the day, including technolo gical, economic, and ethical aspects of these issues. Methods of risk-benefit analysis wil l be introducted. Prerequisite: Approval of t he department chairperson.

A study of bonding in inorganic systems, coor dination chemistry, mechanisms of inorganic r eactions, acid-base theory, Born-Haber cycles , oxidation potential, and structural concept s. Prerequisite: CHEM 5440 or CHEM 3440 and a pproval of the department chairperson.

An investigation of the molecules of life wit h an emphasis on their roles in metabolic pro cesses. Laboratory fee. Prerequisites: CHEM 3 420 and approval of the department chairperso n.

A study of kinetic theory, classical thermody namic principles with an introduction to stat istical thermodynamics, thermodynamics of che mical reactions and equilibrium, reaction kin etics, and modern structural concepts. Labora tory fee. Prerequisites: CHEM 1120, 1320, and credit for or concurrent enrollment in MATH 1330 and PHYS 2411, and approval of the depar tment chairperson.

A continuation of CHEM 5440. Laboratory fee. Prerequisite: CHEM 1120, 1320, and credit for or concurrent enrollment in MATH 1330 and PH YS 2411, and approval of the department chair person.

Study focuses on the theoretical basis and ap plication of instrumental methods in chemical analysis. Laboratory fee. Prerequisites: CHE M 3400 and the approval of the department cha irperson.

A study of the principles and concepts of Env ironmental Chemistry. The chemical processes of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphe re will be investigated. The effect of mad-ma de pollutants on these chemical processes wil l also be studied. Laboratory will focus on e nvironmental sampling and analysis techniques . Laboratory fee. Prerequisite: CHEM 3400.
