General Studies Mission

The purpose of the Walla Walla University general studies program is to provide a balanced education that supports the institution's core themes: excellence in thought, generosity in service, beauty in expression, and faith in God. The general studies curriculum is broad in scope, covering major intellectual or aesthetic ideas or methods in various disciplines. In addition to providing breadth of knowledge and the development of skills for greater depth of study, the general studies program seeks to prepare students for "responsible citizenship, generous service, a deep respect for the beauty in God's creation, and the promise of re-creation through Jesus Christ." The general studies program objectives, shown below by core theme, have been designed to support and enhance the overall academic curriculum. Each general studies course offers unique learning opportunities and contributes to the fulfillment of at least two general studies objectives:

EXCELLENCE IN THOUGHT

• Students will develop the skills for reflection, analysis, criticism, and synthesis.
• Students will learn to responsibly obtain, evaluate, and use information.
• Students will apply the methods of science to investigate and analyze the natural world.
• Students will demonstrate the knowledge of the historical foundations of the modern world.
• Students will demonstrate an understanding of individuals and societies from a social science perspective
• Students will solve problems using appropriate mathematical methods and express their solutions clearly.
• Students will interpret problems symbolically and draw meaningful conclusions from their solutions.

GENEROSITY IN SERVICE

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of social stratification and diversity.
• Students will develop an understanding of and responsibility toward environmental stewardship.

BEAUTY IN EXPRESSION

• Students will learn to formulate, organize, and communicate ideas effectively and responsibly.
• Students will apply their knowledge of literature and the arts through critical and creative work.
• Students will acquire the knowledge and skills needed to participate in physical activity throughout their lifespan.

FAITH IN GOD

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of the Holy Scriptures.
• Students will demonstrate knowledge of Christian doctrines from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective.
