Interior designers held about 77,900 jobs nationally in 2019, with approximately 19 percent being self-employed. The industries that employed the most interior designers in 2019 were as follows:

• Specialized design services (28 percent)
• Architectural, engineering, and related services (18 percent)
• Furniture stores (6 percent)
• Merchant wholesalers of durable goods (6 percent)
• Self-employed workers (23 percent)
