LES 215 Law, Ethics, and Society

Prerequisite: GSTR 210 or Permission of Instructor

This course introduces students to a coherent, disciplined, and multi-disciplinary study of law that is rooted in the liberal arts and the aims of liberal learning. The course considers law as a mechanism used to structure human societies, address conflicts, effect social change, and regulate social, political, ethical/moral, and economic issues that arise for institutions, organizations, and individuals. In addition, students will become familiar with the distinctive practices of legal interpretation and reasoning, including law’s relationship to moral argument, on the one hand, and coercive force, on the other. Finally, students will engage with legal documents, structures, and systems that impact the contemporary study of law as an ethical and social phenomenon.
