CRES-201 Conflict and Process

This course provides students with knowledge about different conflict resolution processes-e.g., mediation, negotiation, arbitration, and facilitation. Role plays will be used to demonstrate the use of these processes and to provide students with an opportunity to practice conflict resolution skills.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Distinguish between the content of conflict and the process of conflict
    management and resolution.
  2. 2. Describe the continuum of processes for conflict management and resolution,
    highlighting negotiation, mediation, facilitation, and arbitration.
  3. 3. Consider the importance and impact of culture on the choice and design of
    process.
  4. 4. Identify and practice basic communication skills in conflict management and
    resolution.
  5. 5. Explain the difference between positional and interest-based negotiation.
  6. 6. Explain the difference between distributive and principled negotiation.
  7. 7. Describe the process of mediation, explain its theoretical underpinnings, and
    identify essential mediation skills.
  8. 8. Understand the process of facilitation in context of group dynamics and
    teamwork.
  9. 9. Describe the process of facilitation, explain its theoretical underpinnings, and
    identify essential facilitation skills.
  10. 10. Describe the process of arbitration, highlighting key differences from more
    consensual processes.
  11. 11. Demonstrate an understanding of ethical considerations for the practitioner of
    each process.
  12. 12. Demonstrate the ability to assess personal strengths and weaknesses in
    different conflict situations and in various third party roles.
