HIST-215 Celtic Ireland
Students will be able to describe the history and development of Ireland from the Celtic settlements to the Cromwellian occupation. Students will be able to evaluate the impact and response of native Irish society and culture to Celtic, Christian, Norse, Anglo-Saxon, and British influences.

Course Objectives
- 1. Identify the major geographical features and environmental characteristics of Ireland.
- 2. Summarize and analyze the character and influences that made up prehistoric and early
Celtic society. - 3. Evaluate and describe the impact of Christianity on early medieval Ireland and its
society. - 4. Discuss and analyze the impact of the Viking invasions on medieval Celtic/Gaelic
society. - 5. Summarize and evaluate the background and impact of the Anglo-Norman invasions on
medieval Ireland. - 6. Analyze and describe the character and nature of the Anglo-Norman colonization of
Ireland. - 7. Discuss and evaluate the relationships between native and Anglo-Norman populations of
late medieval Ireland. - 8. Summarize the re-emergence and resistance of native Gaelic society to Anglocolonialism.
- 9. Evaluate and describe the governing policies of the Tudor and Stuart governments in
Ireland. - 10. Summarize and analyze the policies and actions taken by the English to resubjugate and
pacify Catholic and native Ireland in the 17th century.
