Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Clinical Residency

Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy

The MGH Institute of Health Professions Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy  is accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association as a post-professional residency program for physical therapists in orthopaedics. This one year Orthopaedic Residency program provides physical therapist residents with didactic, scholarly and clinical education opportunities that will enhance their ability to integrate scientific knowledge into clinical practice and will facilitate development of advanced diagnostic, clinical decision-making, and hands-on clinical skills in orthopaedic and manual physical therapy. The Orthopaedic Residency program is structured to meet the Description of Specialty Practice as defined by the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency & Fellowship Education and will qualify residents, upon successful completion of the program, to sit for the Orthopaedic Specialist Certification exam offered by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties.

Residents are matched with one of the Institute’s clinical partners in metropolitan Boston. Over the year-long program, the resident completes a minimum of 1000 hours of paid clinical practice with a specified mix of orthopaedic patients including at least 150 hours of one-to-one mentoring. In addition, residents complete 150 hours of didactic learning through structured coursework and a minimum of 360 hours of resident-directed learning activities. Resident-directed learning activities  include mentored clinical research, community outreach activities, academic or clinical teaching experience, and completion of APTA Orthopaedic Section Home Study courses.
