c. Closure of Programs
Programs may be closed only after a careful and comprehensive process of review, requiring the participation of the faculty, administration, and the board of trustees. A fundamental premise in the event that the viability of a program comes into question is that program self-assessment is an ongoing process. Continuous evaluation of program viability is the responsibility of the provost, in consultation with the faculty, the Executive Council, the president, and the board of trustees.
Program viability is influenced by many factors, including academic quality, market demand for graduates, and program costs. If the viability of a program is deemed by the provost to be in jeopardy, a sequential review process shall be instituted. An ad hoc committee to evaluate the viability of the program shall be appointed by the provost. This committee shall report to the board’s Academic and Student Affairs Committee and the board of trustees. Final decisions regarding program closure are made by the board of trustees following recommendations by ASAC, the provost, and the president.
The director, faculty, and students in a program that is to be closed will be notified at least one year ahead of the anticipated date for closure, unless financial exigency applies. Plans for enrolled students to complete degree requirements will be developed by program faculty. Whenever possible and at the discretion of the Institute, program faculty, staff, and administrators will be reassigned and retained for the duration of their appointment period.
