This course will address the acquisition of language skills, knowledge and discourse of language; the foundations of language instruction, theories of language development, and intervention frameworks for reading specialists.
This course will address understanding the role of K-12 assessments to: guide reading and writing instruction, intervention, and instructional decision-making; and promote and accelerate literacy achievement of all learners, including ELL and students identified with learning disabilities. 30 hour direct contact in field experience.

Examines school, community and family culture of non-English background students to facilitate parent communications and involvement and to maximize student comfort and success.
The teaching of English to speakers of other languages. The study of curriculum and program development, teaching strategies, assessment procedure and material selection for ESL instruction. Practical aspects on organizing and managing the ESL classroom. Why and when transitioning occurs.
Identification and implementation of a variety of assessment tools to determine placement in the ESL and LEP students.
