Master of Arts in Counseling
This is an online program with a partial residency requirement. The residency component will take place at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas during summer months.
The MAC is designed to meet the requirements established by the National Board for Certified Counselors and Related Professionals (NBCC) and the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners. Licensing/certification requirements vary state to state. Students are responsible for checking the requirements for their respective states.
Degree Requirements
Requirements for this partial residency program are divided into the recommended yearly schedules.
Field Placement is the training component of the counseling degree program. Students are required to complete 9 semester credit hours, in 8 terms, accumulating no less than 900 client contact hours. This translates to approximately 15 hours a week at a community behavioral health agency plus class time.
To be eligible to begin Field Placement a student must have:
- Completed no less than 18 semester credit hours
- Taken and earned no less than a “B” in the following 4 courses
- Counseling Theories
- Professional and Ethical Issues in Counseling
- Counseling and the Helping Professions
- Advanced Psychodiagnostics, Treatment Planning and Program Evaluation
- Be in “Good Standing” The student cannot be on academic probation or considered as Provisional Acceptance Status
Students are required to follow a specific process to enroll in field placement. The Field Placement process changes over time. Changes made to Field Placement are done so in an effort do what is in the best interest of clients served and our students. Students will be responsible for completing the field process, as it is defined, at the time they begin the field placement process.
