Graduate studies in Biology, which may include, but are not limited to, one or more of the following topics: ornithology, cell biology, developmental biology, marine biology, ecology, genetics, bacteriology, vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, and herpetology. Students will be exposed to advanced laboratory techniques in the area of study and will be expected to demonstrate competency in using peer-reviewed literature sources. Requirements include a literature search, ora l presentation, and review paper on a relevan t topic in biology.

A study of the mechanisms involved in the imm une response. Emphasis is on the structure an d function of the components of the immune sy stem, including humeral and cellular activity , complement, and hypersensitivity.

A general study of the biotic and abiotic com ponents of estuarine and marine systems, with emphasis on the Gulf Coast of Texas. Laborat ory fee.

A study of the physiology of humans, with an emphasis on fluids and electrolytes, temperat ure, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuroen docrine regulatory mechanisms. Laboratory fee .

A general study of birds and their structure, food relations, nesting habits, seasonal dis tribution, migration, economic importance, an d conservation, with field observations and s pecial reference to Texas birds. Laboratory f ee.

Consists of an extended field trip to differe nt ecological regions of the United States or Mexico with an emphasis on the geology, clim ate, flora, fauna, and culture of the area vi sited. Participants will be responsible for m aintenance of expedition equipment and will c ollect and identify biological specimens. Enr ollment will be limited and will require perm ission of the instructor. Expenses will be sh ared by participants.

A taxonomic study of the orders and families of insects. The economic importance and selec ted morphological and ecological aspects of t he Inseca are considered. Laboratory fee.
