DHYG 102 Histology and Embryology

This course will provide the basic knowledge and skills needed to apply elements of histology and embryology to the practice of dental hygiene. The development of the face, teeth, oral cavities, and nasal cavities will be introduced.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. List the components of the cell and describe the phases of mitosis that are involved.
  2. 2. Integrate the knowledge of the cell components into the promotion and understanding of
    healthy orofacial tissue and any pathology that may occur within them.
  3. 3. Describe the major events that occur during the early weeks of prenatal development.
  4. 4. Describe the process of oral and facial development (face, neck, and oral structures) from
    the time of fertilization to the fetal stage of a human infant including development
    disturbances that can arise during the process.
  5. 5. Explain the process of tooth development, eruption, and exfoliation.
  6. 6. Describe origin, formation, composition, and characteristics of tooth tissues and structures.
  7. 7. List characteristics of the periodontium, structure of bone as a tissue and an organ.
  8. 8. Describe the histology of each component of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
  9. 9. Evaluate occlusion using Angle’s classification of malocclusion.
