DHYG 209 Periodontics

This course will examine the histological and clinical characteristics of healthy and diseased periodontium. Topics will include a discussion of the histological inflammation process and host response as related to periodontal disease. Also included will be the periodontal exam, prognosis, treatment planning, periodontal instrumentation (scaling and root planning), and surgery. Emphasis will be on the prevention and disease control process through the use of oral home care products.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Compare and contrast the clinical and histologic characteristics of the periodontium in
    health, gingivitis, and periodontitis.
  2. 2. Explain factors that cause, modify, or contribute to the development of periodontal
    disease.
  3. 3. Interpret the difference between chronic and acute gingivitis conditions.
  4. 4. Explain the clinical characteristics, etiology, treatment, and prevention of periodontitis.
  5. 5. List, describe, and differentiate the various periodontal diseases according to the 1999
classification system established by the American Academy of Periodontology.
  6. 6. Name and describe the components of biofilm and explain the advantages of bacterium
    living in a biofilm.

  8. 8. Recognize that effective plaque control is the basis for the prevention and treatment of
most inflammatory changes in the periodontal tissues.
  9. 9. Describe systemic and immune factors that contribute to the host response concerning
    periodontal disease.
