DMSU 255 Clinical Sonography V

This course is a continuation of practical clinical experience in all aspects of ultrasonography. The student is encouraged to scan more challenging examinations and to fully participate in the clinical setting as a sonographer. The student is required to complete assigned competencies before completion of clinical education. Attendance at an assigned clinical affiliate for 24 hours per week is required.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Prepare the patient for a sonographic examination based upon the appropriate specialty.
  2. 2. Prepare the exam room for a sonographic examination based upon the appropriate specialty.
  3. 3. Recognize normal and abnormal echogenicity of soft tissue structures.
  4. 4. Differentiate spatial relations on the sonogram: anterior, posterior, superior, inferior, left and right, etc.
  5. 5. Choose the proper transducer for the exam and patient body habitus.
  6. 6. Create the ultrasound image through proper use of instrumentation.
  7. 7. Comply with the ultrasound department protocol.
  8. 8. Analyze the patient’s chart for pertinent information.
  9. 9. Demonstrate appropriate patient care skills.
  10. 10. Assess the requisition to determine the area of interest.
  11. 11. Demonstrate the proper departmental procedure for permanent image acquisition (PACS, hard copy
    storage, etc.).
  12. 12. Demonstrate the elements of a proper report by composing a written description and verbal report of
    selected sonograms for the supervisor or radiologist.
