EDUC 160 School Age Child Care

This course introduces the philosophy of elementary education with basic child development theory focusing on how children grow physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. Approaches in curriculum, planning, goal setting, and selection of age-appropriate materials and methods by which educational objectives are obtained are stressed. Students learn how to plan an appropriate program for school age child care.

Course Objectives

  1. 1. Know and understand the stages of social, physical, emotional, motor, cognitive, and
    language development from six years of age to twelve years of age.
  2. 2. Gain a basic understanding of the concepts, inquiry tools, and structure of content areas
    to create meaningful, challenging activities and learning experiences and environments
    for all children in before/after school settings.
  3. 3. Know and understand positive relationships and strategies to use relationships and
    supportive interactions in their work.
  4. 4. Know and understand how to support learning by encouraging children’s problem
    solving, thinking skills, and academic and social competence.
  5. 5. Understand the elements of being a professional, including a code of ethics and legal
    standards, demonstrate knowledgeable, reflective critical perspectives of his/her work,
    and understand his/her role as an advocate.
  6. 6. Understand how to develop healthy, developmentally supportive and safe
    learning/activity environments, both indoor and outdoor, for children.
  7. 7. Understand and provide developmentally appropriate activities and learning experiences
    across and within activity areas.
  8. 8. Demonstrate familiarity with appropriate community resources.
