AVMP 283 Audio Documentary

This course is a survey and analysis of historic and contemporary audio documentary combined with student generated, topic-driven audio documentary production. Students hone production skills and build producing skills, including topic and show research, pitching, pre-interview and booking guests, field and studio recording, interview skills, logging field sources, writing scripts, voicing narration, and audio editing.

Course Objectives

  1. Analyze, critique, and deconstruct national radio documentaries.
  2. Identify trends and styles of documentary radio and web podcasts including what is airing where.
  3. Discuss and develop stories for a variety of audiences both targeted and broad.
  4. Write for, interview for, record, voice, edit, and publish audio documentaries both alone and as part of a team.
  5. Utilize narrative arc, character development, effective ambient sound, and evocative writing to produce a professional audio documentary.
  6. Utilize advanced digital multi-track editing software to produce complete, polished documentary projects for inclusion in a portfolio.
