DHYG 100 Dental Hygiene Theory and Clinic I

Through lecture and laboratory experience students will become knowledgeable and develop proficiency in basic principles of infection control, instrumentation, patient motivation, and assessment techniques. Clinic will correlate knowledge from the didactic portion of the course to conducting oral health services on typodonts and/or student partners under direct supervision of a supervising dentist. Skills will be practiced to competency.

Prerequisite

Admission to the Dental Hygiene program and ENGL 121, BIOL 107, and MATH 138. Pre- or corequisite: BIOL 106.

Course Objectives

  1. Define the healthcare roles of a dental hygienist, four levels of supervision, professional code of ethics, and core values in dental hygiene services, and compare and contrast ethical issues and ethical dilemmas.
  2. Classify the six phases of the Dental Hygiene Process of Care (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, evaluation, documentation).
  3. Identify steps for a systematic approach to evidence-based dental hygiene practices using various types of research studies.
  4. Apply infection control strategies using Standard Precautions and Personal Protective Equipment to a competent level.
  5. Demonstrate proper patient reception and ergonomic practices conducive to dental hygiene practice.
  6. Demonstrate proper documentation necessary for HIPAA compliance and patient record keeping using dental software in the operatory.
  7. Demonstrate patient assessment strategies using patient assessment forms and vital signs.
  8. Demonstrate patient assessment strategies by using periodontal, extraoral, and intraoral examination techniques to identify normal and abnormal anatomical landmarks.
  9. Identify patient oral health status using assessment techniques to assess level of plaque, calculus, bleeding, and overall homecare.
  10. Define treatment and protocol for the following medical emergencies: neurological, cardiac, respiratory, endocrine, bleeding, and other emergencies that may take place in a dental office.
  11. Demonstrate proper positioning, application, and adaptation of the following periodontal instruments: explorer, periodontal probe, curet, and sickle scaler in all sextants of a simulation unit and student partner.
  12. Demonstrate to a competent level proper calculus removal on a simulation unit and student partner using an explorer, periodontal probe, curets, and sickle scaler instruments.
