DMSU 182 Ultrasound Vascular I

This course focuses on the carotid, peripheral vascular, abdominal, arterial, and venous Doppler ultrasound exams. The principles of the vascular physical examination, proper instrumentation for each type of ultrasound, as well as anatomy, pathology, hemodynamics, patient history, clinical manifestations, non-invasive techniques, pathology, and interpretation will be discussed.

3 hours lecture

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the differences between potential, gravitational, and kinetic energy.
  2. Describe the relationship between volumetric flow and blood flow velocity.
  3. Apply knowledge of fluid dynamics and hemodynamic changes when interpreting cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous, and arterial ultrasound images.
  4. Identify the risk factors, signs, and symptoms associated with cerebrovascular, abdominal, peripheral venous, and arterial diseases.
  5. Identify the anatomy of the vascular system and explain the effects of collateral flow on vascular arterial hemodynamics.
