ENGL 105 Special Topics in Literature

In this course, students study literature that shares a common theme or that is limited to a particular historical period or genre. In addition, students are introduced to critical reading strategies, literary criticism, and a diverse and expanding literary canon. Students will learn to recognize themes and patterns that commonly occur in literature.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and analyze how writers in different times and places have explored similar themes or patterns in literature.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider how texts relate to enduring and contemporary cultural issues in literature.
  3. Identify and discuss ways in which related art (film, paintings, music, etc.) help broaden our understanding of literature.
  4. Analyze literary works for an academic audience.
  5. Organizes ideas and source material in order to make clear, cohesive arguments about literature.
  6. Communicate effectively an understanding of the literature and present it to others.
