A course in beginning Japanese with an emphasis on the development of the listening skills needed to understand a basic core of topics relevant to everyday life and students' interests; the oral skills needed to talk about these topics and to function in basic situations; basic skimming, scanning, and intensive reading skills; basic writing skills, including descriptive and functional writing as well as the writing of the phonetic Japanese alphabets and Chinese characters; and sociocultural awareness.
