Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management

Degree Outcomes

The Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management (M.S.O.T.M) program creates leaders who can manage the complexities of modern enterprises by achieving competitive advantage through the use of operations and technology. The curriculum is rigorous and quantitative in operations and technology management and integrates theories and applications from business analytics, decision modeling, networking & telecommunications, process modeling, project and quality management, supply chain management and systems analysis & design. 

Learning Goals and Objectives for Master of Science in Operations and Technology Management Graduates

  1. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will develop and master the knowledge and skills in the fields of Operations and Information Technology necessary to engineer competitive advantage within organizations and be able to apply these skills in real business cases and problems. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be able to demonstrate competency in the key fields of Operations and Information Technology when they apply the knowledge in the required courses and practical situations. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be able to integrate the knowledge in the subfields of Operations and Information Technology to solve complex business problems and provide value-adding solutions through the improvements of operations and processes and/or the utilization of technology applications.
  2. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will possess highly developed analytical and critical thinking skills needed to maximize organizational performance and oversee more efficient operations. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will acquire the analytical and critical thinking skills needed to identify and frame business problems and evaluate the value provided by possible solutions. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be able to select appropriate techniques and tools to analyze data and identify insights that aid problem solving and decision-making
  3. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will possess the research skills necessary for data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting of results to aid business problem-solving. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be proficient in data collection using various venues such as surveys, electronic databases, the World Wide Web, library, and other sources. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be adept at analyzing data to offer insights for a variety of business problems. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will have the ability to prepare and present research reports, appropriately presenting facts, analysis, and conclusions.
  4. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be able to evaluate the ethical and societal implications of managerial decisions. M.S.O.T.M. graduates will be able to identify ethical dilemmas, analyze them from multiple ethical and stakeholder perspectives, and recommend appropriate solutions to these dilemmas.

Admission Requirements

M.S.O.T.M. applicants should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university recognized by the University of Portland. Current admissions standards are a score of 550 on the GMAT (55th percentile in quantitative and 50th percentile in verbal) and a G.P.A of 3.20. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) can be accepted in place of the GMAT exam.  The minimum GRE score must be equivalent to earning 550 on the GMAT using the comparison tool.  The GMAT/GRE requirement can be waived if an applicant has significant and relevant work experience (at least five years); has successfully completed 12 hours of coursework at an AACSB accredited graduate business program with a cumulative G.P.A of 3.0 or higher; has a business-related graduate degree from an accredited program; or has taken six hours of graduate business courses at the University of Portland as a non-matriculated student and earns a 3.0 cumulative G.P.A or higher. Admission to the M.S.O.T.M. program is based on the entire application including two letters of recommendation, a resume, and a statement of goals, not merely quantitative factors.  It is strongly recommended that applicants have two to three years of professional experience after their bachelor’s degree to fully benefit from the program. Applicants whose native language is not English or who did not complete their degree at a university or college in the United States must achieve a minimum score of on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) of 88 iBT (internet-based test) or 570 (paper-based) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) of 7.0.  See the M.B.A. program director for specific requirements.


MSOTM Degree Requirements

For M.S.O.T.M. candidates who do not have an academic or professional OTM background, BUS 505, Introduction to OTM, will be required before starting the common courses and electives.  M.S.O.T.M. students will complete 30 credit hours of specialized coursework in operations and technology management including four common courses (12 credit hours); five concentration courses (15 credit hours) either in operations management or information technology or a combination of these two fields; and a capstone component.
