Recommendations for Dual Degree 3-2 Engineering Majors
Exploring the Major for the Dual Degree— Students interested in the 3-2 Engineering Dual Degree should contact the Dual Degree Engineering Advisor as early in their College career as possible, in order to explore the various engineering fields available and which course work would best be pursued while at Berea. During their first year, students should begin the mathematics sequence by waiving or completing Developmental Mathematics, MAT 115, and MAT 125. Students also should waive or complete MAT 135 and take either CHM 131 (plus its prerequisite, the waiver or completion of CHM 101) or PHY 315 in the first year or as early as possible. Courses in this major will satisfy the PRQ/PR requirements of the General Education program without additional course work. Students should begin finding courses to satisfy the six Perspective Areas, health and wellness, and other General Education requirements as early as their first term at Berea. For the purpose of meeting the required 20 earned course credits outside the major, the engineering course work taken elsewhere will be considered as collaterals and/or electives, both of which are counted outside the major. Students are encouraged to participate in undergraduate summer research or Internship to meet the Active Learning Requirement.
Admission to the Major —Due to the minimum GPA requirements by Washington University (3.25) and the University of Kentucky (2.3 to 2.8, depending on engineering specialty) in the eight (8) required mathematics and science course credits listed above, the applicant should waive or complete MAT 135 and 225, as well as complete CHM 131 and PHY 315, with a combined GPA of at least 2.5 for these four courses.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete the Berea portion of the dual-degree requirements WITHIN THREE YEARS)— In their first year, students who waived Developmental Mathematics also must waive or complete MAT 115, MAT 125, and MAT 135, the latter of which is not only a major requirement, but also begins the major’s Mathematics course sequence and is a prerequisite to PHY 315. (NOTE: MAT 135 and PHY 315 can be taken concurrently.) CHM 131 (plus its prerequisite, the waiver or completion of CHM 101) or PHY 315 also should be completed in the first year or as early as possible. Students must waive or complete MAT 225 and complete MAT 330 the second year, and MAT 437 the third. Students in this program also will need to make steady progress in completing most or all of the General Education curriculum while at Berea. As an exception, GSTR 410 should be taken during the third year, before transferring to the engineering school.
Course Sequencing Considerations (in order to complete the Berea portion of the dual-degree requirements WITHIN FOUR YEARS)— In their first year, students must waive or complete Developmental Mathematics, MAT 115, and MAT 125. CHM 131 (plus its prerequisite, the waiver or completion of CHM 101) should also be completed in the first year or as early as possible. By their second year, students must waive or complete MAT 135. MAT 135 is a major requirement, begins the MAT course sequence, and meets a prerequisite requirement for PHY 315. (NOTE: MAT 135 and PHY 315 can be taken concurrently.) Once students have completed CHM 131 and are taking or have completed MAT 135, they can take CHM 311. Students must waive or complete MAT 225 and complete MAT 330 the third year, and MAT 437 the fourth. Students also should complete all or most of the General Education curriculum, in the sequencing described in the “Academic Regulations” section of this Catalog (including taking GSTR 410 in the senior year).
Proficiency Requirements for Retention in and Completion of the Major— In addition to all required course credits listed above, students in this major must satisfy program standards for written and oral communication. The following course credits each must be completed with a grade of C or higher in order to progress to the next level: MAT 135, MAT 225, and MAT 330.
Other Considerations and Recommendations— Students should be aware that the minimum GPA for admission to the engineering schools is higher than the 2.0 minimum required at Berea. For Washington University, the minimum GPA is 3.25; for the University of Kentucky, it is 2.3 to 2.8, depending on the engineering specialty. Because of language requirements at many engineering schools, including the University of Kentucky, students who are working toward a dual degree at an engineering school are strongly encouraged to satisfy Berea's International Perspective requirement by completing two courses in the same foreign language. Because most engineering programs also require some economics, students are strongly encouraged to satisfy Berea’s Social Science Perspective requirement by completing ECO 102, Principles of Microeconomics. In addition, because most engineering programs require at least one course in Communication, COM 100 is recommended as one of the electives outside the major.
