Procedures for Initial Non-Voting Faculty Appointments

  1. Initial nominations originate either from a faculty member, program director, department chair, dean, or the Office of the Provost.
    1. If a faculty member recommends the appointment, she/he shall write a letter of nomination to the dean, which includes the expected role of the non-voting faculty member.
    2. Once the dean receives the nomination from a faculty member, the dean will determine whether to forward a recommendation for appointment to the Provost.
    3. Nominations for non-voting faculty appointments originating from within the Office of the Provost will follow the program procedures if the potential applicant will have a program affiliation. For example, a candidate being recommended by the Office of the Provost for appointment in the School of Nursing would be recommended to the Dean of the School of Nursing for a determination.
  2. Responsibilities of the dean or director in initiating or pursuing appointments:
    1. Formally invite the candidate to apply for a non-voting appointment.
    2. Arrange a discussion with the candidate in which the following agenda is met:
      1. A brief, mutually agreed upon discussion of responsibilities, and
      2. Explanation of procedures for application, including the plan for appropriate faculty rank in conjunction with the appointment. Candidates interested in pursuing rank should be given the Institute criteria.
  3. To request the assignment of rank, the dean or director will electronically submit the Non-Voting Faculty Appointment Form and the candidate’s CV to the Provost. The assignment of rank shall be in accordance with the Criteria and Interpretive Statements for rank.
  4. If approved, the Provost will notify the dean or director and Office of Human Resources of the appointment in writing.
  5. The Provost will notify the non-voting faculty of an affirmative decision via formal letter.
