SEC 518 Methods of Teaching Social Studies at the Secondary Level

What is social studies, why do we teach it, and how do we teach it? As the preservice secondary education methods course for social studies teacher candidates, SEC 518 gives students a sustained chance to define and develop their answers to these questions, gain exposure to high-quality teaching resources, and design their own original instructional units. Teacher candidates will read widely in the historical and prescriptive literature regarding social studies instruction, debate the epistemological and ethical stakes of the field, and gain practical experience with instructional design. SEC 518 is a crucial moment of professionalization. Building from their knowledge of history, geography, and civics, candidates deepen their understanding of the structures that organize these subjects—learning how to orchestrate disciplinary inquiry via designed instruction.
