The Master of Arts in Education is a variable semester credit hour program depending on one’s study concentration. Formal course work is designed to help the adult student acquire subject matter mastery, apply knowledge and conduct research in various areas within the field of education. The program of study consists of foundation (including a master’s research project), concentration, and elective courses (in some programs). The program has been created to provide graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to:

  • Improve and enhance their teaching and services to students.
  • Provide their students with an enhanced learning environment.
  • Prepare and plan for change in schools.
  • Assist schools and the community to improve education for all students.
  • Assess outcomes of school curricula, programs, services, and activities.
  • Assume leadership roles in education.
  • Engage in continued professional growth.

Concentration for Middle School - Mathematics, History, and General Science

This concentration is available to students pursuing the Master of Arts in Education in Elementary Education, Elementary Education Unified, Secondary Education, or Curriculum and Instruction. 

Overview

This pathway prepares teacher candidates to meet the unique developmental, academic, and social needs of adolescents in grades 5-8. Provides in-depth content knowledge and pedagogical expertise in mathematics, history, and/or general science, with an emphasis on inquiry-based instruction, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary learning. Develop skills in curriculum design, assessment, and responsive teaching practices that support all learners. Field-based experiences enable candidates to apply evidence-based instructional strategies in authentic middle school settings. Graduates are prepared to create engaging learning environments that foster academic achievement and adolescent development.

Concentration in ESOL and Middle School English-ELA

This concentration is available to students pursuing the Master of Arts in Education in Elementary Education, Elementary Education Unified, Secondary Education, or Curriculum and Instruction. 

Overview

This pathway prepares teacher candidates to effectively support multilingual learners PreK-12 while developing expertise in middle grades English language arts 5-8 instruction. Grounded in responsive and evidence-based practices, the program emphasizes language development, literacy, reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills for all adolescent learners. Gain knowledge of second language acquisition, instructional strategies for English learners, and developmentally appropriate pedagogical approaches for grades 5-8 as well as PreK-12. Field experiences provide opportunities to apply theory in the global classroom settings and foster inclusive, relational learning environments. Graduates are prepared to meet the educational needs of multilingual middle school students, PreK-12, and promote academic success across content areas.
