Hst 588 Modern Arabia
A survey of the history of the Arabian Peninsula in the 19th and 20th centuries. Emphasis will be on socio-economic and governmental institutional change with discussion of changing cultural values. The role of the British and Ottoman empires, Islamic reformism, oil, and the emergence of nation states (Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, and the Gulf States). Also offered for undergraduate-level credit as Hst 488 and may be taken only once for credit. Recommended prerequisite: upper division standing.
