ENG 27600 African-American Literature

(GE-Lit) This course includes pre-emancipation slave narratives, spirituals, poetry, and essays; and post-emancipation poetry, song, autobiography, prose, and drama. The course examines works from a selection of African-American authors; considers some of the ways these writers defined themselves, their culture, their "America"; discloses some of the obstacles they met; and discusses criticism of a "Black" aesthetic.
