HPE - Health and Physical Education
Introduction to the sport of Rowing; designed for the novice (beginner). Includes basic technique and terminology, cardiovascular training (erging, rowing, running) and strength training. Emphasis will also be placed on learning land and water safety, attention to details with equipment on and off the water, and rowing terminology. All sessions will include both land and water training. (Graded on a pass/no pass basis)

Recognizes the unique demands of college student athletes and assists them in acquiring skills which will allow them to respond to those challenges. Course content will reflect issues relevant to adjustment to college life; social, academic, and athletic performance demands.

Development of personal fitness goals in strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and cardio-respiratory endurance using a variety of exercise techniques, anaerobic and aerobic activities, and run/walk programs.

Introduction to weight training techniques for the development of muscular strength and endurance. The course includes the development of an individualized program.

An introduction to the Korean martial arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido, this class will cover basic stances, blocking, striking, kicking, forms, joint-locking, and self-defense. Through physical practice, we’ll look at similarities and differences in the two styles, while also learning about the Korean culture. Graded P/NP.

A primer on the Filipino arts of Kali/EsKrima (using a rattan stick for defense/attack), Panantukan ("dirty boxing"), Pananjakman (kicking), and Dumog (grappling/off balancing). Course is graded Pass/No Pass.

A class based on Bruce Lee's philosophy of martial training, this course combines mainly kickboxing and trapping skills. Cooperative/instructional rather than competitive. Course is graded Pass/No Pass.

Designed to provide a working knowledge of the prevention, care, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Basic principles of taping and use of modalities will be presented.

Prerequisites
BIO 103 or equivalent.
Students will develop a solid foundation of life skills needed to maintain personal physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and fitness. Nutrition, hydration, exercise, psychological health, family health, financial health, environmental health, along with local, national, and global health issues will be studied. CPR and First Aid certification will also be completed.

Students apply their knowledge of human anatomy to the study of movement with major emphasis placed upon the action of bones, joints, and muscles and the role of the nervous system in relation to body control. The applicable mechanical principles to gross motor activities are stressed.

Equips the student with the knowledge, procedure, and techniques an athletic trainer uses to perform joint evaluations, apply therapeutic modalities, and rehabilitate athletic injuries. Students will be expected to complete a project involving procedures used in specific athletic injuries.

Provides the student with a workable knowledge of human physiological response to exercise and other environmental stresses. Students will be involved in such practices as the use of graded exercise testing to determine physical fitness levels.
